If you are a parent like me, you know that taking care of our kids comes before anything else and everything else comes before the need to take care of ourselves. The tale as old as time is… If we do not take care of ourselves, we not only limit our ability to help others, but we also show our kids that we should put ourselves last. THAT’S NOT THE MESSAGE WE WANT OUR KIDS TO GET! We want to be around a long while for our families as well as to accomplish our dreams and goals. That means we must act now and not later.
TIPS TO HELP LOWER/ REGULATE BLOOD PRESSURE
1. Exercise
Yeah, I know you’ve heard it all before, But wait, it's true! A good exercise routine has many benefits. One of those being exercise lowers blood pressure. I know it sounds strange, how can something that requires so much physical work, lower your pressure? Great question! Exercise lowers blood pressure by strengthening the heart. A strong heart pumps blood with ease. If the heart does not have to work as hard, the force put on your arteries decreases. The American Heart Association recommends 30 minutes a day. Guess what, it does not require a lot of work. Something as simple as taking a walk or cleaning the house for 30 minutes is a great way to accomplish this.
2. Nutrition:
Eating healthy is not equal to bad or nasty food. Eating healthy is being more aware of what and how much food you put into your body. When in doubt ask yourself these questions.
Does the food you intake help you reach your goal, or push you further away from it?
How do you feel after you eat it?
What is the sodium percentage?
Aim to eat more home-cooked meals than take out. Avoid high sodium/salty items. Add more omega3 foods to your diet (fish, Avocado, seeds, nuts, and beets).
3. Hydration:
Water is the thing that many people forget about during the day. Either people are too busy and forget or just do not like water and as a result do not drink it. A lack of hydration can cause major problems in one’s body like kidney failure, dry mouth, lethargy, weakness in muscles, and low blood flow, which is a problem if blood pressure is an issue. Hydration is vital not only for those with high blood pressure but for everyone, every day! Try to get at least 64oz of water a day to start. The goal is to get up to a gallon a day.
4. Regular checkup:
Commonly people think if they cannot see an issue, things are fine. Or an issue comes up and gets ignored. You are important, you matter! Maintaining communication and regular check-up with your Dr ensure your body is responding the way you want and need it to. Also, it’s a good idea to go in and make sure your home blood pressure cuff is reading correctly for safety measures.
